Caring For Your Furniture

HOME  CARING FOR YOUR FURNITURE

A little tender loving care goes a long way. Keep your Soul & Tables purchases in perfect shape with a few basic care tips.

And remember, if you ever need an extra hand dealing with those stubborn stains, we’re just a quick phone call or email away!

Rule of Thumb

  • Always use placemats and coasters under hot pots and pans or cold glasses and bottles.

  • Regular dusting is a key step in proper wood maintenance

  • Clean up any spills immediately to prevent any severe staining.

  • When cleaning the surface of any wood furniture, always work in the direction of the wood grain.

  • Use a damp (not wet!) cloth and natural soaps to clean your wood.
  • Don't apply additional oils or coating without checking in with us.
  • Wood will discolor when directly exposed to UV light. To prevent this, shield your wooden furniture from direct sunlight and shift around objects placed on the furniture from time to time.

NATURAL TEAK WOOD

To allow the beauty of its grain to take center stage, our teak furniture is simply polished so that its natural oils can rise to the surface. Because teak is a high-density wood, stains do not penetrate too deeply, making it easy to use and maintain.

Daily care

- Dust your furniture regularly with a dry, non-fluffy cloth.
- To clean up spills, use a cloth or sponge dampened (not too wet!) with a solution of water and natural soap or gentle soap.

Don’t worry about cleaning your teak wood too often. Frequent cleaning with a natural soap solution will gradually cause it to build up a protective layer, allowing it to become even more stain-repellent.

Preventive treatment

If you’re worried about stains, consider adding a protective layer of varnish to your teak purchases. At Soul & Tables, we offer an on-site complimentary water-based topcoat that seals the pores of the timber, forming a natural protection between the wood and other substances. Take note that this treatment may result in a slightly darker finish on your furniture pieces.

Regardless, spills should be removed as quickly as possible. Even with this preventative treatment, if any liquid or substance is left to penetrate the wood, your furniture may still suffer a stain.

Tackling stubborn stains

Over time and with intensive use, your teak furniture may need an extra hand to look good as new.

What will you need? Natural soap, water, a cloth, and sandpaper with a minimum of 320 grit.

Before you start, make sure the surface is dry and clean. If not, please wipe the table with a damp cloth and, if needed, natural soap. Allow a bit of time time for the water to evaporate, before you get to work. To sand down the stains, you may use extra fine sandpaper (minimum 320 grit) to sand in the direction of the wood grain. Once done, wipe the dust with a dry cloth.

Need some assistance? All wooden Soul & Tables products enjoy on-site complimentary lifetime maintenance, so you can always schedule a session with us to refresh your furniture.

Daily care

- Use a dry, non-fluffy cloth for regular dusting.

- To clean up spills, use a damp sponge or cloth (not too wet!) with a mild solution of water and natural soap.

- Even though your item is better protected with this coating, spills should still be removed immediately

SOFT FURNISHINGS

Leather

Our leather sofas are made of genuine aniline (cow) leather. This is a type of leather that is dyed using soluble dyes which penetrate the leather to showcase the natural texture and markings of the hide. This achieves the desired colour of the leather while still retaining all the natural characteristics of the hide.

Aniline leather is widely regarded as the epitome of quality in the leather industry. It boasts a luxurious, natural appearance that highlights the beauty of the leather. The softness and richness of aniline leather contribute to its high-quality status.

However, because aniline leather is not coated, it is more susceptible to staining, fading, and scratches. It is not recommended for high-traffic areas or homes with children or pets. On the flip side, the lack of coating makes aniline leather soft and more comfortable to sit on.

Tips:

  • Refrain from exposing the items to direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Vacuum regularly and wipe with a soft cloth dampened with water
  • Avoid rubbing the leather vigorously or scracthing the leather with any sharp objects as this will leave marks
  • Do not use detergents, solvents and abrasives on any leather surfaces
  • To nourish the leather you may apply a layer of beeswax

Indoor Fabric

You may use a mixture of natural soap and water to clean stains. Do not throw covers it into your washing machine as this may lighten the fabric and result in uneven discolouration. Further-more, a wash in the machine, even at low temperatures, may shrink the fabric.

Please hire professional dry cleaning when needed and avoid using any chemical products on the fabric.

The fabric of our soft furnishing and upholstered teak chairs can only be treated with dry cleaning products.

OUTDOOR FURNITURE

Metal furniture should be cleaned with a soft, non-abrasive sponge, using fresh water or a detergent-free soap. Careful cleaning will avoid the build-up of lime scale. For dirt that is more heavily ingrained, you can use either a window-cleaning product that contains alcohol, or a specific multi-purpose cleaner such as Star Brite®.

For furniture that includes both metal and Outdoor Technical Fabric, the fabric should be cleaned with soapy water. For ingrained dirt, you should use a brush and a specialist product such as Star Brite®.

ETHNICRAFT ACCESSORIES

Our wooden trays are varnished with a water-based top coat to repel common substances and fluids, such as coffee, tea, and wine. However, the protective coat is no foolproof guarantee against stains. We recommend removing spills immediately to prevent staining. Always use coasters to prevent hot surfaces from leaving marks on the wooden trays.

Wooden Trays

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth. For a more thorough cleaning, use furniture polish with a soft cloth.

Glass & Mirror Trays

Wipe the surface with glass cleaner and soft cloth.

Metal

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth. For a more thorough cleaning, use mild soap and warm water. Rinse with clean water and wipe dry. Do NOT use steel wool, sandpaper, mineral acid, bleach, or chlorine cleaners on metal surfaces.

Care Instructions for Furniture with Metal

Do not drag tables along the floor, as it might damage the protective coating, cause rusting, or leave permanent marks on the floor. Always lift the furniture when moving them from place to place.

Furniture with a Metal Base on a Varnished Wooden Floor

Always ensure water and solutions used to clean the floor do not come into contact with the furniture’s metal base, as it might leave permanent marks. We recommend attaching rubber or plastic leg protectors on the metal legs. Protectors made from felt are not recommended.

Furniture with a Metal base on an Unvarnished Wooden Floor

Some wood species, such as oak, contain tannin, which causes the wood to react with metal and leave permanent marks on the floor. We recommend attaching rubber or plastic protectors to the furniture’s metal legs. Protectors made from felt is not recommended."

RUGS

As all rugs are handcrafted, there will be the occasional loose end which will come undone. Do not pull on it if this happens; instead try to feed it back into the loom, if possible, or cut it. Vacuum clean regularly and remove spills immediately with a clean, dry, undyed cloth or paper towel. Periodic professional cleaning is recommended.

MATTRESSES

Airing of the bedroom

Regular airing of the bedroom will guarantee a healthy and pleasant environment for yourself and your mattress. High humidity in combination with inadequate ventilation can lead to damp stains.

Airing of the mattress

The fabric of the Heveya mattresses is composed of soft, natural materials, which must be aired. If you cover it with a counterpane, ensure the latter is permeable to air and moisture.

As with all new things, Heveya mattresses have a specific intrinsic smell. If the mattress is aired, this will disappear within a few days.

Turning

We recommend that you turn your mattress every 6 months. This way, the material can recuperate more easily, and the sleeping comfort will be retained even longer.

Cleaning

All the covers of Heveya mattresses can be dry cleaned. Washable models are specially marked. Please follow the textile instructions at all times (see label). We recommend you clean your mattress cover at least once a year.

UV light

Never expose your uncovered latex core to UV light - daylight or sunlight - as it dramatically increases your mattress's aging.

BED LINEN

Washing

Wash your linen sheets with like colors on low temperatures in lukewarm or cold water. Use the gentle machine cycle and mild detergent to protect the fibers. Avoid using bleach and fabric softeners, and avoid dry cleaning.

Drying

You can tumble dry your sheets so long as you use low to medium heat and a gentle tumble setting. Remove the linen sheets from the dryer when slightly damp and hang or lay flat to dry.

As with all new things, Heveya mattresses have a specific intrinsic smell. If the mattress is aired, this will disappear within a few days.

Storage

Store your linen sheets in a cool, dry place and avoid storing them in plastic as this could cause yellowing of your sheets. Remember that your linen sheets are made of natural fibers which need to breathe. The best is to store your linen sheets in the nifty linen storage bag that your sheets came in.
